Advanced Master in International Development (AMID) Leer-werktraject voor jonge academici

 

De Advanced Master in International Development (AMID) van het Centre for International Development Issues Nijmegen (CIDIN) is een leer-werktraject voor jonge academici. Het is een éénjarige opleiding die loopt van januari tot en met december. In de opleiding combineren recent afgestudeerde, talentvolle academici een juniorfunctie bij een ontwikkelingsorganisatie met een toegepaste en op het werkveld gerichte opleiding die verzorgd wordt door de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.

PP personeelsdiensten draagt, samen met het CIDIN, zorg voor de selectie van de deelnemende academici. De sollicitatiecommissie bestaat uit de opleidings-coördinator van het CIDIN en een senior recruiter van PP personeelsdiensten.

 

Call for Trainees for the AMID 2012 programme

In January 2012 the one-year programme for the Advanced Master in International Development (AMID) will start again.

The AMID is a dual learning programme, meaning that trainees work four days a week at one of the affiliated  organisation engaged in international (development) cooperation  in the Netherlands and participate one day a week in the teaching and training programme at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. The CIDIN organises the traineeships at these  organisations. For the 2012 programme we are looking for around 25 to 30 trainees.

The AMID prepares young academics for a professional career in the field of international (development) cooperation. The objectives of the programme are threefold:

  • Training graduated Master students in becoming qualified professionals, able to contribute in a constructive and critical way to the complex and multi-dimensional field of international (development) cooperation with its rapidly changing social, economic and political contexts.
  • To create a pool of talented and well qualified young professionals for international (development) organisations.
  • To create interaction between science and practice. Therefore the AMID integrates research, policy and practice in its teaching and training programme. 

 

Programme description

The programme equips trainees with the necessary academic knowledge, professional skills and personal competences enabling them to work in the field of international (development) cooperation. With regards to academic knowledge, trainees obtain a critical understanding of the key developments in the international development sector and the current policy debates, paradigms and trends in this sector. The AMID programme furthermore positions international development cooperation within the broader global framework of world wide developments. . Therefore ample attention is paid to international (development) cooperation and developing countries in relation to topics such as climate change, international trade, public private partnership and conflict. Examples of training sessions that focus on the obtainment of professional skills are financial appraisal, knowledge management, lobby & advocacy and designing & applying planning, monitoring and evaluation tools. Finally, with respect to further development of personal competences, trainees learn for instance intercultural communication skills and, through intervision, to critically reflect on their own performance in the organisation. The programme consists of four cumulative and mutually supportive modules, organised around a specific topic, in which, in a mixture of lectures and training sessions, academic knowledge, professional skills and personal competences are integrated. Please note that the language of instruction in the teaching and training programme is English.

 

Job description

The trainees work as a regular junior officer. Their job package consists of, amongst others, policy related work, research and/or project management. All trainees work under the direct supervision of a senior colleague of the development organisations involved.

 

Entrance requirements

·     Master degree in Development Studies or related discipline, such as Social Geography, Development Economics, Cultural Anthropology, Public Administration, International relations and marketing etc. (ultimate graduation date 31st of October 2011);

·     Knowledge of international development cooperation, development economics, NGOs and civil society;

·     International work experience in developing countries of at least three months but preferably six months (internship, research);

·     Demonstrable affinity with international development cooperation;

·     Good active knowledge of Dutch and English and active knowledge of other languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese) is preferred;

·     Ability to work in a team;

·     Open and flexible attitude;

·     The programme is directed at young academics that start their professional career (about 25 years old).

·     Prior upon applying, candidates should possess a work permit and a visa to be able to work and live in the Netherlands

 

Conditions of employment 

From January 1st 2012 trainees will be employed at a Dutch development organisation. Trainees work four days a week for a compensation consisting of the minimum wage (0.8 x € 1,435,20  gross per month). The organisation does not give a job guarantee. The organisation agrees to pay the programme’s tuition fee and the trainee’s commuting expenses (including on course days). The trainee pays for all other expenses such as health insurance, accommodation and living costs. Please note that CIDIN does not provide scholarships, bursaries or any other form of financial support.

The deadline for application is Monday 5th of September 2011. Interviews with the organisation(s) that offer a traineeship are expected to take place in the period October, November and the beginning of December 2011.

 

Foreign applicants

Please note that foreign applicants can only apply if they are fluent in writing and speaking in Dutch and English. In addition, prior upon applying, foreign applicants should possess a work permit and a visa to be able to work and live in the Netherlands.
